The selection camps will be held from September 4-6 at Basketball Australia's Centre of Excellence in Canberra with 12 athletes then chosen to represent their country at the FIBA U16 Asia Cup.
While the venue and date for the men’s event is yet to be finalised, the women will compete in Bengaluru, India from October 22-28 in the same location as the Opals’ FIBA Asia Cup last month.
The impressive group of 18 males and females has been chosen after observing athletes at the Australian Under-18 and Under-16 Junior Championships as well as performances in their respective state and territory high performance programs.
The Sapphires team, including athletes from Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales, will take part in a series of on-court sessions and scrimmages at the selection camp.
“I am very happy with the squad we have selected for the camp in September,” said women’s team mentor Shannon Seebohm.
“There is a high level of talent and athleticism and it is an exciting group.
“The players we have chosen will give us the ability to implement a similar style of play to the one we had success with in 2016 [when the Sapphires won the World Championship gold medal].”
Crocs coach Justin Schueller was similarly impressed with the talent pool from Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia as he prepares for his first campaign at the helm of the Under-17 men.
“We are excited for the guys that have made the squad to this point and we can’t wait to get started,” Schueller said.
“The athletes have demonstrated their abilities in the areas we value and we believe it is a versatile and exciting group.”
