Scholastic Sports Stadium will act as the main venue for the tournament which will see 20+ teams participate in over 80 games across five days.
The Under-20’s sees the best talent from around Australia represent their state and territories across a men’s and women’s competition while playing against their national rivals for the Championship.
The Ivor Burge Champs provides an opportunity for intellectually disabled players to compete on a national stage and represent their state or territory while a Japanese team has also featured over the past few years.
While this will be the first time Gosford has accommodated the Under-20’s and Ivor Burge Championships, they have hosted several Junior Championships in the past including the Under-14 Girls Club Championships most recently in 2015.
“The Under-14’s two years ago was well presented and we are very pleased to now bring the Under-20’s and Ivor Burge Champs to Gosford,” said Basketball Australia Competitions Manager, Paul Maley.
“As the final stage of the junior pathway, the Under-20’s provides a stepping stone for Australia’s best young athletes to progress to the next stage of their basketball development.
“The shortened tournament schedule will treat local sports fans to five action-packed days of elite level junior basketball.”
“We are very excited to host the Under-20s and Ivor Burge tournament,” said Kieran Moore, President of Gosford City Basketball.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Gosford City Basketball to showcase our facilities.
“In addition, the entire community will benefit from the flow on effect for tourism on the Central Coast.”
Member for Terrigal, Adam Crouch, was equally thrilled about the opportunities the tournament will provide Gosford.
“We will see the Central Coast proudly being able to show off what we have on offer with around 4000 spectators visiting during the five days of competition,” said Crouch.
“I would encourage as many Central Coast locals as possible to take the opportunity to watch some outstanding basketball at the stadium in Duffy’s Road in Terrigal in February.”
