Competition is heating up as we near the midway point of the group stage at the Under-16 Championships with a couple of teams staking their claim for Championship favouritism.
Pool B for the boys sees two undefeated teams with Vic Metro, who got the better of the home team Qld South, and WA Metro, who held off ACT by 12 points after leading by 11 at quarter-time, setting the pace.
Blake Neilson leads WA Metro at the offensive end with 19.5 points per game to sit second in the tournament for scoring but Eoin Fitzgerald, who showcased his impressive shooting at last year’s Under-14’s, is placed first with 20 points per game for NSW Metro.
They sit undefeated at 2-0 in Pool A, having prevailed against SA Metro by 12 points to hand them their first loss.
However, NSW Metro are still a game behind Vic Country who sit on top with a 3-0 record but both teams will be wary of defending Champions Qld North, who got on the winners list yesterday against NT.
The Qld North girls are faring a little better, placed first in Group B alongside SA Metro with 2-0 records.
Shaneice Swain has been outstanding at both ends of the floor for Qld North, leading all players for scoring (23 points per game) and steals (5.5) while she has also drained five three-pointers in her first two outings.
In Pool A for the girls, Vic Metro have three consecutive wins but they will face a real test today at 5pm when they come up against NSW Metro who are nipping at their heels at 2-0.
The forward combination of Georgia Kitchell and Charlise Dunn, both placed in the top five for rebounders, will be a major concern for NSW Metro but the likes of Millie Prior and Felicity Henderson have the offensive firepower to match their opponents.
SA Metro (second place) will also meet Qld North (fourth) today and the winner of that game will thrust themselves into top-two contention in Group B as we head towards the finals later in the week.
