Athlete Categorisation is an Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) methodology, implemented in conjunction with National Sporting Organisations (such as Basketball Australia) for identifying, tracking, and prioritising athletes at each stage of the Performance Pathway. Categorisation helps to inform our planning and to prioritise support systems in place to best achieve system targets.
When an athlete becomes categorised a range of additional support services and offerings become available to them within the Australian High-performance sporting system. If you are unsure what is available to you as a categorised athlete, please reach out to your Wellbeing Manager.
Basketball Australia, in collaboration with the AIS, has developed a sport-specific matrix that defines each of the five categorisation levels for the sport of Basketball in Australia. The five categorisation levels are:
- Emerging
- Developing
- Podium Potential
- Podium Ready
- Podium
Athletes are assessed against our sport-specific matrix and overall categorisation framework at the end of each year to be nominated for Categorisation in the following year. Categorisation does not determine selection into National Teams, though may be a contributing factor in athlete identification and support services throughout the pathway. An athlete may be listed with one discipline but still be eligible and identified in another discipline.
