A squad of 19 athletes will head into camp at Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) from May 11-14 as the Australian Under-19 Gems prepare for the 2017 FIBA World Championships in July.

The Gems have qualified for the World Champs following an unbeaten run in the FIBA Oceania tournament late last year, that culminated in a 107-52 victory over New Zealand in the gold medal game.

Eleven of those players that competed in the Oceania tournament will be present at the May camp and they will be joined by three WNBL players in Anneli Maley, Cassidy McLean and Chelsea Brook, two CoE athletes in Jasmine Simmons and Rebecca Pizzey, Morgan Yaegar from the University of Oregon as well as Mackenzie Hoycard and Miela Goodchild who have starred at past Australian Junior Championships.

“We have a tremendous group of talented young female athletes which includes some of the gold medal winning athletes from the 2016 Under-17 team as well,” said head coach Paul Goriss.

“This camp in May is an integral part of our preparation for the World Championships. It provides the coaching staff with the opportunity to evaluate the athletes in a camp environment and allows us to build from our previous camp last year as well as from our FIBA Oceania qualification.

“The camp will be competitive and tough like any national team camp should be and selection for spots to the next camp in June will be highly sought after.”

That next camp is positioned around a month out from the World Championships, which Australia have qualified for alongside 15 other countries including the USA, Russia, France and host nation Italy.

The Gems will be aiming to get on the podium for the third straight time after winning bronze medals in 2015 and 2013 while they were also silver medallists in 1997 and gold medallists in 1993.

“While we have to prepare ourselves and give the athletes every chance of success, we will also provide the players with scenarios we may face against tough opposition styles of play at the World Championships,” said Goriss.

“During the camp we will re-establish our style of play, concepts and structures from an offensive and defensive perspective.

“We will also have some team building in regards to what are the behaviours, attitudes and pillars of success that this team will have as their culture.”
