Australians finish second in Stankovic Cup

An Australian team has finished second to host nation China in nthe Stankovic Cup.

An Australian Men’s Team has been defeated by the Chinese national team, 70-51, in the final of the 2012 Stankovic Continental Cup in Guangzhou, China to finish second in the four-team invitational tournament.

Townsville Crocodiles rising star Todd Blanchfield led the way with a team-high 11 points for the Australians, while Cameron Bairstow added 10 points to be the only other Aussie in double-figures.

Yi Jianlian led the Chinese with 14 points and Yi Li added 12.

China had beaten the Australians in the preliminary round comfortably, and started the Final with an 18-10 run in the first period.

The Chinese then kept the young Australian side to just eight points in the second period, establishing a 34-18 edge at the long break.

A 20-13 third period in favour of the Chinese put the contest beyond doubt and, despite the Australians outscoring China 20-16 in the final stanza, the home team ran out comfortable 19 point winners.

Poor shooting cost the Australians, as they made just 12-of-40 two-point attempts and 6-of-25 threes.

The loss left the Australians second in the tournament, with Tunisia defeating Russia 80-512 in the earlier third-fourth playoff.
