Rollers & Gliders World Challenge starts tomorrow

The 2012 Rollers and Gliders World Challenge featuring the Australian men’s and women’s Paralympic wheelchair basketball teams tips-off in Sydney tomorrow (Wednesday 18 July) and Gliders’ captain Bridie Keane says the international tournament could be critical in helping the Australian women beat the powerful German team in London.

The Rollers and Gliders World Challenge runs from 18-21 July at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre, with the Rollers men taking on Great Britain and Japan, and their female counterparts the Gliders facing off against Japan, Germany and China.

Keane says that facing the Germans, who beat the Gliders in the Paralympic World Cup gold medal game and are the favourites to win in London, should help the Aussies go one step further this year.

“It seems that every time we have faced Germany in the past 12 months we get closer to doing exactly what needs to be done to beat them. So bit by bit we are working towards finishing that into a complete game and I think the World Challenge is when we can do that,” said Keane.

Keane believes that playing real international games prior to London is invaluable to the Gliders.

“Nothing replaces games,” Keane said.  “So the World Challenge is a great opportunity to have these teams come to us and for us to be able to deepen our game base before London.”

The Australian women’s captain says the timing of the tournament makes it an invaluable part of the Gliders’ Paralympic preparation.

“I think the timing of the World Challenge is perfect for our preparations because we have these games where we can put into place a lot of the things we’ve been working on in our national league seasons and in our individual states with enough time to fine-tune and develop even further before we head over.”
