The Australian Boomers fought hard and reeled in a big margin, but world number two Spain were too good, winning their Group B match at the London Olympic Games, 82-70.
Australia struggled to find the basket for a large stretch of the third period and couldn’t quite match the offensive power of a Spanish team loaded with NBA stars.
Joe Ingles led the Boomers with 12 point, six rebounds and three assists. Patty Mills added 11 points despite early foul trouble. Aron Baynes also had eight points and five rebounds.
LA Lakers star Pau Gasol led the Spaniards with 20 points, while Rudy Fernandez added 17 points and six rebounds.
The Boomers struggled for the second straight game to land shots from outside, going just 4-of-22 from the perimeter. They also failed to get to the freethow line regularly, managing just six attempts for the game.
The Boomers started strongly and led 19-14 at the first break as they had six players score in an even effort.
Spain outscored the Boomers 23-13 in the second, but Australia were well and truly still in the game at the half, down 37-32.
Spain ran riot in the third quarter however as Pau Gasol’s brother Marc sparked a surge that saw the Spaniards outscore the Aussies 26-10.
The deficit looked set to blowout even further in the final period before Australia mounted a spirited comeback to pull within ten points with two minutes to play.
Time ran out for the Australians however and Spain improved to 2-0 while the Boomers fell to 0-2.
Australia have a day to recover before facing China on Thursday evening Australian time. They must now win two of their three remaining games to advance to the quarter finals.
