Long-serving Head Coach Larry Davidson has put together a mix of solid international experience and exciting young talent as preparations step up for the World Championships to be held from 19-28 October in Ankara, Turkey.
The Pearls – Australia’s national women’s basketball team for players with an intellectual disability – are currently ranked number one in the world following stellar performances which earned them gold at the 2011 INAS Global Games and 2010 INAS World Basketball Championships.
Veteran Pearls in the 10-strong squad include Kaitlyn Papworth (Vic M), Bernadette Mills (NSW C), Eliza-Jane Mills (NSW C), Nicole Harris (NSW M), Kim Perry (NSW M) and Molly Urquhart-Moran (Vic M), who will be looking to maintain the team’s hard-earned dominance on the world stage.
Among the exciting new talent debuting for the Pearls are Kate Leckenby, Jasmine Dellas and Kimberley Reed from Vic Country, alongside Katrina Baines from NSW Metro.
Basketball Australia Chief Executive Officer Kristina Keneally said the Australian Pearls headed to the 2013 INAS World Basketball Championships with a phenomenal record, making them the team to beat.
“The Pearls head to Turkey with a string of medals behind them – including two gold and one silver from their last three international tournaments,” Ms Keneally said.
“We hope to see the team continue their medal-winning form at this year’s World Championships and will be closely following their progress later in the year.”
