#BOOMERSUSA MURAL UNVEILING

In August 2019, the Australian Boomers will duel with USA Basketball across two games at Marvel Stadium. To be held in the fortnight prior to the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China, these games will see the return of the American team to Australian shores for the first time since they won gold at the 2001 Goodwill Games (Brisbane).

To celebrate this outstanding major event coming to Melbourne, Visit Victoria in collaboration with Basketball Australia has commissioned internationally renowned Australian graffiti artist ‘Sofles’ to create a piece that celebrates the strength and history of the local basketball community with a 3x3 court that will be available for use by the general public at the iconic Marvel Stadium.

This installation demonstrates Melbourne ‘s pride as the home of basketball and a legacy for the two games beyond their completion.

Working with the Australian Boomers to depict the grassroots to world stage strength Victoria has in the sport, by immortalising some (of many) great trailblazers in the game, with key features including community street ball and players - Lauren Jackson, Liz Cambage, Andrew Bogut, Ben Simmons and Andrew Gaze.

All five players have made and continue to make significant contributions to Australian basketball, both on a domestic and global stage.

The installation of the mural and a 3x3 court has taken place across two weeks, with drone footage and time lapse content to be made available to the assembled media. This highlights the intricate details of the artist’s work, as well as the sheer scale of the mural itself.

The space is accessible for all and we encourage Melburnians and visitors to this great city to enjoy this outstanding new tribute to Australian basketball at their convenience.

SOFLES
Sofles has been both reviled and embraced by the media over the course of his ten-year career as a graffiti artist.

Following years of perfecting his craft, he burst onto the scene in the late 2000s with sold out exhibitions and collaborations alongside artists including Anthony Lister, Ben Frost and Revok and contracts with adidas and Red Bull.

Sofles imagery is wide and varies, with collages of mind-bending abstraction melting into intricate snapshots of the artist’s imagination. His bold use of colour has ensured a distinctiveness known internationally, and a position as one of the country’s most identifiable artists.
