Basketball Australia is thrilled with the news of Andrej Lemanis’ appointment to the head coaching position at the Brisbane Bullets as of October 2016.
Prior to the commencement of the NBL 2016/17 season, Lemanis will continue to coach the Boomers through to the Rio Olympics and will be fully committed to the preparation and success of the team.
Having taken over the head coaching role of the national team in 2013, Lemanis has prepared the Boomers to both successfully navigate the new FIBA Asian qualification system and, ultimately, secure a medal at future World Championships and Olympics.
“As the new coach for the Brisbane Bullets, Andrej will impart his international experience and knowledge to the latest generation of elite basketballers,” said Basketball Australia CEO, Anthony Moore.
“This will, in turn, benefit the Boomers program in the long run.”
With World Cup qualification processes changing dramatically after Rio in the lead-up to the 2019 World Cup, qualification windows will fall within professional league seasons for competitions such as the NBA and NBL.
Basketball Australia is well underway with planning for this new qualification process and considerations must be made when looking at the head coaching role, particularly with respect to the amount of time required for national team activity.
