The Australian Boomers are returning to the burbs to play their final qualifying games for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup against Bahrain and Kazakhstan.

The Boomers will play 2 games in one of Victoria’s best grassroots stadiums- State Basketball Centre.

The Boomers have qualified for the World Cup with 9 straight wins and 1 forfeit so this is an opportunity for the fans to see them before they head off next year to chase an elusive gold medal.

The Boomers best performance at the World Cup was 4th in China in 2019, with the level of talent currently in the playing roster, expectation for a podium finish is high.

Fresh off their win in Kazakhstan, co-captains Mitch McCarron and Nick Kay will be joined by Dejan “DJ” Vasiljevic, all players vying for a spot on the 2023 World Cup team.

The NBL will take a break for the February window ensuring the best talent in the county is available for selection.

Former Boomer Captain and Team Manager Jason Smith knows the importance of the younger generation being able to watch the national team play and is excited to be returning to the State Basketball Centre for these games.

“We all started our basketball careers in these stadiums, it’s where we all learnt to play and dream of one day wearing the green and gold. We want to bring the Boomers back to the fans it’s always special to play in front of true basketball fans. We have already qualified but the pressure isn’t off, each player wants to secure a spot at the World Cup in 2023 so the fans can look forward to some great basketball,” said Smith.

All fans are invited to wear their local club singlets to celebrate grassroots basketball.

Past Boomers will be at the games to hand out prizes for the best singlets.
