Australian Opals coach Sandy Brondello was today appointed as Head Coach of the New York Liberty following eight seasons with the Phoenix Mercury when she leaves an impressive record of 150-108, one title and a playoff appearance every year.
Brondello said today “I love the WNBA and am very excited about coaching New York Liberty who have an impressive roster of players including Australian Sami Whitcomb. 2022 is going to be a big year with the WNBA season being closely followed by the FIFA Women’s Basketball World Cup at home. Women’s basketball is on the rise and it’s an exciting time to be involved.”
Sami Whitcomb who is currently in Australia playing with Perth Lynx is excited about the appointment of her new WNBA coach saying “it’s a really exciting hire bringing Sandy in, her experience and knowledge of the league and game will be really critical for us moving forward. Obviously, our Opals connection make it especially fun for me!”
Brondello is contracted to coach the Opals until Paris 2024 and will be in Australia later this month to meet with the squad and see them in action in the WNBL.
