Another blow for the luckless Damian Martin will see him miss the Oceania Championship with a calf injury.
After an ankle injury kept him out of the 2012 London Olympics, Martin will miss the game against the New Zealand Tall Blacks at Rod Laver Arena this Saturday night having hurt his calf at training.
“I pushed off on my calf and felt a small pop,” Martin said. “There wasn’t a whole lot of pain involved but enough to be able to do some damage to my muscle.
With a full NBL season to prepare for beyond the Oceania Championships, Martin also had to way up his short-term goals.
“I’m on the wrong side of 30 now and it’s just a shame that it happened so close to such a big event for basketball in Australia.”
Having already dealt with the loss of Dante Exum during the Boomers European tour, coach Andrej Lemanis made the decision to bring in Cam Gliddon as Martin’s replacement.
“It’s a great reflection of what we’ve been trying to do in the last couple of years,” said Lemanis. “Cam has been with me in the Sino challenge before… so hopefully the ability to bring someone in is as smooth as possible.”
