Eungella Rainforest is one of few places in the world to watch the platypus in its natural habitat, so this is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience (there are a couple of experiences in the Mackay region that are difficult to find anywhere else in the world.) Here is how you can explore the best of what Eungella has to offer in one day:
Breakfast: Start with a delicious breakfast along Mackay’s trendy Wood Street - famed for its art deco buildings. Brekky from 9th Lane Grind, Moss on Wood or the Dispensary will fuel you up, ready for a big day of adventure. Take a short stroll and admire the art deco and heritage buildings.
Hit the open road: Head west on a 70-kilometre scenic drive through The Mackay Region hinterlands, following the Mackay Eungella Road. Pass through the picturesque townships of Marian, Mirani, Pleystowe and Gargett.
Finch Hatton Gorge: Turn right at Owens Creek Loop Road and then left onto Gorge Road, until you reach Finch Hatton Gorge. It’s time to explore! A popular walking track starts at the picnic area and takes you on a 1.6-kilometre journey to breathtaking Araluen waterfalls.
Eungella: Feeling refreshed? Travel back along the Mackay Eungella Road, even further into the hinterlands. Don’t forget to stop in the Eungella township to enjoy the views and take some
happy snaps from the top of the range – they are simply spectacular!
Lunch: Follow Eungella-Dam Road, a winding stretch of road enveloped with lush rainforest. Once you reach the Broken River Visitor Information Centre, park your car and enjoy lunch at Platypus Lodge Restaurant & Café or the Eungella Chalet. They are open 10am to 3pm, closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Discover Eungella National Park: Choose from hikes ranging from 10 minutes to 3 hours long. Or try the Sky Window circuit, a leisurely 250 metre walk that boasts spectacular views of the entire Pioneer Valley. Dawn and dusk are the best time to see a platypus at the viewing platform at Broken River
Relaxing Drive: Wow what a day! It’s time to drive back to Mackay, admiring the afternoon views as the sun falls on the Pioneer Valley.
Dinner: Once in Mackay, stop in at the Shamrock Hotel on Nebo Road for a budget-friendly family dinner with a gaming lounge, sports and lounge bar, garden dining and terrace.
