The Emerging Boomers got their 2015 World University Games campaign off to a great start with a convincing 46-point win over Chinese Taipei on Saturday.

The Emerging Boomers scoring 93 points to Chinese Taipei’s 47.

Mangok Mathiang, Mitch Creek (17) and Peter Hooley (15) all shot their way into double figures, Mathiang with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds.

“It was good to get the first game under our belt,” admitted Emerging Boomers coach, Andrej Lemanis.

“As expected, there was a certain anxiousness at the start of the game with a lot of these players unaccustomed to playing together and with only a handful of games of experience as a group. It was good to work our way through that and establish our style of play.

“The game presented an opportunity to give everyone a good run and all the players to feel their way into the tournament.”

With first game jitters evident down both ends of the court, it was Corey Maynard who got the scoreboard ticking over for the Emerging Boomers with two shots from the charity stripe.

Mathiang then imposed himself on the game, the US-based Australian on national representative debut this tournament, his efforts ensuring the Emerging Boomers finished the opening period with an 18-9 lead.

Chinese Taipei returned to the court with renewed vigour, getting to within five points before Hooley kicked off a scoring run for the Emerging Boomers that resulted in 11 unanswered points and the scoreboard reading 40-21 at half-time.

The trend continued with Creek, Mathiang and Hooley combining to extend the Emerging Boomers lead to 35 points heading into the final quarter.

“There will be some learnings from this game and we have some things to work on for tomorrow’s important game against France,” concluded Lemanis.

While the match (scheduled for 4pm AEST) will be the Emerging Boomers second, the French are yet to play.

The Emerging Opals will also begin their campaign on Sunday, playing Uganda (7pm AEST) .
