The Emerging Boomers have started their tour of China very well, recording victories against Serbia and the Liaoning Leopards in their first two games.
Starting their clash against Serbia with a few nerves, the first half was a defensive battle with the Boomers trailing by just a point at half-time.
They began to find their rhythm in the third quarter though and broke down the Serbians with a disruptive style of defence while their dominance on the boards eventually yielded results.
A +19 differential in rebounds saw the Boomers race over the top of Serbia in the final quarter, winning the term 25-16 to run out 74-62 victors.
Todd Blanchfield was outstanding, collecting 23 points on 3-9 three-point shooting, Jordan Hunter recorded a double-double of ten points and ten rebounds while Jason Cadee controlled the tempo of the game with nine points and four assists.
“Any time you get a win against a European powerhouse like Serbia it is a great result,” said coach Andrej Lemanis.
“Our defensive effort and dominance on the glass laid the foundations for a well-deserved victory.”
The following night against a Chinese Provincial team, the Liaoning Leopards, the Boomers earned another hard-fought 67-65 win.
A second slow start in as many games saw the visitors trailing by eight points at the first break. However, they did not panic and slowly reduced the margin as the match progressed before they countered with an impressive final term to run over the top of the Leopards.
Matt Kenyon paced the Boomers with 15 points, while Blanchfield (14 points) again hit double-figures and Cadee pulled down nine rebounds.
“These types of tournaments provide you with a great opportunity to challenge yourself against different styles and tonight against an Asian Team was different to what we experienced last night,” said Lemanis.
“But credit to the group, they just kept finding a way to remain competitive and ultimately grind out a great win.
“We still have a lot of improvement areas but the effort and commitment that we are showing is extremely pleasing.”
