North Queensland will play host to some of the best minds in the international game when the FIBA World Association of Basketball Coaches conduct two coaches clinics in Cairns and Townsville next week.
The World Association of Basketball Coaches (WABC) holds coach development clinics and events throughout the year and has secured leading coaches from Australia, Canada and New Zealand for clinics in Cairns (April 3) and Townsville (April 4), including current Opals head coach and north Queensland legend Sandy Brondello.
In announcing the clinics, WABC President Patrick Hunt said it was a huge coup for Australia and the region to host these valuable coach development activities.
“As part of the World Association of Basketball Coaches Global Coaches Clinics Program, it is great to see the National Coaches from Basketball Australia, Canada Basketball and Basketball New Zealand National Teams presenting at these WABC Coaches clinics in north Queensland,” he said.
“These are a not-to-be-missed opportunities to observe these exceptional coaches in action sharing and demonstrating, on-court, exciting coaching methods, techniques and drills for coaches at all levels.
“The World Association of Basketball Coaches is very pleased to provide this coaching opportunity in association with Basketball Queensland and Basketball Australia.”
The Cairns clinic will feature Australian Boomers mentor Andrej Lemanis, as well as Canadian men’s head coach Kirby Schepp, respected New Zealand Tall Blacks coach Paul Henare and Tall Ferns leader Guy Molloy.
To be conducted at Early Settler Stadium from 6.30pm-8.30pm, the clinic is open to coaches of all levels of experience and will cover aspects such as rebounding, individual defence, post play and full court transition concepts.
In Townsville, four-time Olympian and former WNBA Coach of the Year Sandy Brondello will headline the clinic presenters, with Opals assistant coach and WNBL championship winner Cheryl Chambers joining Canadian women’s head coach Steve Baur also presenting on the night.
A Mackay junior, Brondello will present on shooting technique and drills, with Baur touching on full court press and Chambers covering offence against extended defence.
Both clinics are free and will provide coaches with an opportunity to learn new drills, teaching points and the latest international concepts from highly respected and experienced coaches.
