Fixture released for 2021 Australian Under 20 and Ivor Burge Championships

Basketball Australia (BA) has today released the fixture for the 2021 Australian Under-20 and Ivor Burge Championships to take place May 3 – 7 at the McDonalds Mackay Multi-Sport Stadium in Queensland.

The 2021 event is part of a two-year agreement between BA, Tourism and Events Queensland and Mackay Regional Council that will see the North Queensland city host these championships in both 2021 and 2022.

The Australian Under-20 Championships was first established in 1974 (men’s) and 1981 (women’s), and see teams representing state and territories for the title of Under 20s Australian champions. The Ivor Burge Championships is for open-age players with an intellectual disability and dates back to 1995 when the inaugural tournament was held.

Across the five days of competition, McDonalds Mackay Multi-Sport Stadium will host 70 games of elite level basketball featuring 25 teams in total.

Due to the residual challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, there were not enough team nominations to enable a women’s division of the Ivor Burge Championships to be contested in 2021.

BA Executive General Manager Basketball Paul Maley says while it is unfortunate that the women’s division of the Ivor Burge Championships won’t go ahead this year in Mackay, fans are in for something special as the country’s finest young men’s and women’s basketball talent takes to the court plus the five men’s teams contesting the Ivor Burge Championships.

“In little under three weeks’ time, the best emerging basketball talent from across Australia will descend on Mackay in Queensland to contest what is revered as one of the best amateur basketball tournaments in the world.

“2021 is a very important year for our Under 20 athletes, with both the men’s and women’s Under 19 FIBA World Championships to be contested later this year. These Australian Championships in Mackay provide a vital opportunity for national team squad members to put their hand up for future honours.

“We know all teams are raring to go for this year’s Under 20s and Ivor Burge Championships which will feature 70 games of back-to-back action over five days.

“Basketball Australia would like to thank the Queensland Government, Tourism and Events Queensland, Mackay Regional Council and Mackay Basketball for their support of these championships over the next two years.”

In partnership with Australia’s leading sports streaming service, Kayo Sports, 18 of the games including the Finals will be streamed live and free on Kayo Freebies featuring multi cameras with expert commentary.

The remaining 52 games of the 2021 championships will be streamed live without commentary and accessible via the Basketball Australia YouTube account.

Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson said council was looking forward to hosting elite level junior basketball athletes in our region.

“Events like these are not only great news for sporting fans but they improve the region’s liveability,” Mayor Williamson said.

Tickets went on sale at 12.00pm AEST on Friday 16 April 2021 from https://basketballaustralia.intix.com.au/

• All event and day passes (tickets) must be purchased online and in-advance, with no Box Office facilities at the venue.
• Due to COVID-safe protocols, patrons must adhere to all event instructions.
• All event and day passes (tickets) must also have a unique name against it for contact tracing purposes. Tickets are not transferrable between patrons and ID may be requested at the door by ticketing staff.
• All event passes will require the patron to pick their supporting team, this will ensure priority access to these games.
• BA strongly suggests any travelling family and friends purchase an event pass.
• Day passes will be available for purchase from 10.00pm AEST the day before. Limited numbers of these will be available.
• If patrons plan to attend on a day pass, please purchase this before departing home to avoid disappointment.
• Due to capacity limits, entry to the Grand Finals will be ticketed separately via the competing teams. Patrons with an Event Pass of the competing teams will have first access to Grand Final tickets.
