John Carey appointed Chair of Basketball Australia

John Carey has been confirmed as the new Chair of Basketball Australia’s Board with Damian Armour announced as Deputy Chair.

John is a partner at wilson/ryan/grose lawyers, he has been practicing as a solicitor for over 25 years and predominantly advises in relation to risk and risk management on construction and infrastructure projects. Damian is Partner, Management Consulting at KPMG and is the current Chair, Basketball Australia, Finance Audit Risk Sub Committee.

Following the board meeting today to confirm his appointment, John said “I’m delighted to be appointed as Chair and to lead the organisation through this exciting time as our teams prepare to head to Tokyo Olympics.  Basketball has never been in a stronger position globally with participation numbers continuing to show strong growth. The new Board’s vision is to work towards alignment for our sport for all stakeholders, to ensure focus on growing the number of participants and pathways for our athletes.  I would like to thank Ned Coten and David Reid for their significant contribution and dedication to BA on behalf of the wider basketball family.”

The Board of Basketball Australia is John Carey (Chair), Damian Armour (Deputy Chair), Anna Cicognani, Nickie Scriven, Alison Cameron, Andrew Major and Greg Sam.

The four new Board members confirmed today include:

Damian Armour

Damian forged a significant executive career holding various roles at Epworth Health Care including CEO of Epworth Geelong. He is currently a Partner, Management Consulting at KPMG a position he has held since March 2020. He has significant experience in governance, finance, strategy and people, culture and change management. He is the current Chair, Basketball Australia, Finance Audit Risk Sub Committee, a position held since July 2019.

Alison Cameron
Alison has extensive experience in governance, risk and compliance both in the public and the private sectors in Australia and internationally. She has extensive experience as a business coach and mentor with expertise across Government relations, strategy and stakeholder engagement. Alison is the Head of Governance, Risk and Compliance for Youi Insurance and was previously at Zurich Financial Service, NSW Government and Suncorp.

Andrew Major
Andrew is an experienced financial services professional with broad expertise across a range of disciplines including law, risk & compliance, investment banking, principal investment and superannuation. Andrew is the Chief Risk and Compliance Officer for HESTA, and the Chair, Australian Investment Council (AIC).

Greg Sam

Greg has considerable international and national senior executive level experience in public, private and non-government organisations. He has extensive skills and expertise in the application of corporate governance by virtue of his qualifications and involvements either as the Chair or as a member of various organisations’ Governance, Finance and Audit & Risk Committees.  He is the current Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Doctor Service of Australia- South Eastern section, a position he has held since 2013.
