Lemanis finds positives in Boomers’ loss to Lithuania

The Australian Boomers lost their second match to Lithuania in the two-game series, but according to coach Andrej Lemanis, there is plenty of reason to be optimistic.

Lithuana defeated the Boomers in Siauliai, 92-85 in the international friendly in front of 6000 people.

“The issue for us tonight was turnovers,” said Lemanis after the game. “We had 20-odd during the game and I think at times our execution offensively was just a little bit erratic. We’re still trying to find our rhythm with that. Defensively, we gave up 92 points. Lithuania shot the ball at 52% basically from the field, 54 from the three – it’s hard to win basketball games if you turnover 20 times and let the opposition shoot that sort of percentage.

“Having said that they’re a very good basketball team,” he continued. “They’re going to exploit your weaknesses. It’s exactly why we’re here, to continue to get better.”

David Andersen top-scored for the Boomers, with 20-points to his name; with Brock Motum (15), Andrew Bogut (12) and Brad Newley (11) all getting into double figures.

Matthew Dellavedova took to the floor for the first time this tour, with just over 17 minutes played in a solid performance under the net.

Lemanis said that the team had improved from their series opener.

“I thought we were better than we were the other night and that’s what this tour is about for us,” he said. “It’s about preparing for our [Oceania] Championship.

“I’d like to thank Lithuania for hosting us. We always enjoy coming here it’s a wonderful basketball country. The crowds are fantastic and it’s a wonderful environment in which to play basketball and it’s really great for our preparation to be able to come and play against good teams. We will take a lot out of these two games.”

Next up for the Boomers is Slovenia with two games to be played in two days on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, Australian time. The team will then return to Australia for the opening game of the 2015 FIBA Oceania Championships, against New Zealand at Rod Laver Arena, played on August 15.
