Seven Consulting Opals

About

The Seven Consulting Opals are one of Australia’s most historic and successful national teams.

The first ever international basketball fixture featured an Australian women’s team versus New Zealand in 1938.

From that moment, the Opals have earned a reputation as prolific performers on the international stage.

The Opals were crowned FIBA World Cup champions in 2006 and have medalled at five other summits (silver 2018, bronze 1998, 2002, 2014, 2022).

Since their integration into FIBA Asia, the Opals have medalled at every FIBA Asia Cup (silver 2017, bronze 2019, 2021 & 2023).

At the Olympic Games, the Opals have been a force. Since their first qualification in 1984, they’ve tallied six medals from 10 appearances (silver 2000, 2004, 2008, three bronze 1996, 2012, 2024).

As of March 2025, three Opals players have been acknowledged in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame including Robyn Maher AM, Lauren Jackson AO OLY and Michele Timms AM.

Three players have been inducted to the FIBA Basketball Hall of Fame, including Robyn Maher, Penny Taylor and Michele Timms.
