The directors of Basketball Australia this week elected Edward (Ned) Coten to the position of Chair of the Board of BA Limited (BA). David Reid was elected as Deputy Chair.

Ned has been Acting Chair since the resignation of Rob Marcolina in December 2016 for personal reasons. He has been a Director of BA since March 2014, when elected by the member states and territories.

After the meeting Ned commented that he was honoured to lead the Basketball Australia Board.

“Having first picked up a basketball in country Western Australia and falling in love with the game, I come to the position of Chair with considerable excitement for the opportunities we have” he said.

“I am proud of the work done by the Board and management of Basketball Australia in the past few years. The business is in great shape and we have the opportunity to drive the new strategic plan and vision taking Basketball in Australia to 2020.”

Ned boasts extensive experience across all levels of basketball – as a participant, administrator and director in both professional and volunteer capacities over the past 35 years.

He attended the Australian Institute of Sport and represented Australia at the 1983 World Junior Championships in Spain. He had a brief career in the NBL and co-founded the Goldfields Giants in WA’s State League. Ned has been the CEO of two NBL clubs, a WNBL Club and served on numerous local, state and national boards.

Outside basketball, Ned holds an MBA from the University of NSW and has a range of business interests in aged care, storage and IT. He has written a book on marketing and branding for sport and was responsible for implementing the current brand strategy and identity for Australian basketball.

He will continue to chair BA’s Associations Commission while serving as Chair of the BA Board.

David Reid has also been a member of the BA Board since March 2014 and was elected to the position of Deputy Chair.

He is a national corporate partner of Sparke Helmore Lawyers and has practiced law for more than 20 years, bringing a strong background in commercial and accounting law, the Corporations Act and regulatory matters.

David boasts substantial directorial experience, having served on the Boards of Newcastle Basketball, Basketball New South Wales and various other companies across manufacturing, private investment and mining.

He also has significant experience in playing and coaching basketball, having represented NSW, Newcastle, Manly-Warringah and Port Macquarie as a player, coach and manager.

David will also continue to serve as chair of BA’s Finance, Audit and Risk Committee as well as representing the interests of Australian basketball as a member of the Board of FIBA in Oceania.

David said he was privileged to be elevated to the position of Deputy Chair and remain as the head of the Finance, Audit and Risk committee.

“In the past two to three years I have seen significant consolidation of the organisations finance and corporate governance. I look forward to working with fellow Directors and the Basketball Australia staff, along with the FIBA Oceania board, as we head for a successful Tokyo campaign”.
