Basketball Australia would like to congratulate the referees who have been selected to officiate the finals at the 2023 Under-16 Foot Locker National Championships in Perth.
The process of appointing referees for the medal games adheres to a fair and structured approach. Technical Commissioner Chris Clarke has shed light on the selection process.
“All of the referees start on an even playing field, and a referee coach is allocated and they provide an overview of feedback from the games throughout the week, which we then collate and come up with a selection of referees that are best fitted for the medal games.
“The referees have to be coachable and receptive to feedback, and we look to see an improvement across their games throughout the week. That is usually the key for me – we want to see that they implement the coaching tips that we give them,” Clarke said.
Today’s gold medal games are set for a Southern State double-header as South Australia Country will go head-to-head against the reigning champions, Victoria Metro in the boys’ division, while the girls’ division will see Victoria Metro face off against South Australia Metro.
In their quest to take the third spot on the podium, the Queensland North girls are set for an origin-style clash with New South Wales Metro, while the boys’ game will see New South Wales Metro aiming to upset the home-state favourites, Western Australia Metro.
“The medal games will be tough. In fact, all of the games during the week have all been challenging in different ways, but there will definitely be pressure on the medal games and the referees will need to work really hard to make sure that they officiate those games well,” Clarke said.
