Basketball Australia on Voice to Parliament

Following NAIDOC week, Basketball Australia has released its statement to key stakeholders and staff on the Voice to Parliament.

Following NAIDOC week, Basketball Australia has released its statement to key stakeholders and staff on the Voice to Parliament.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community play a significant role in our sport, and we recognise their rights to having a voice.

The MOU between the Aboriginal Basketball Academy and Basketball Australia announced during NAIDOC week is a major step forward as we create more pathways and opportunities for our First Nations Peoples.

Our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), which was endorsed by Reconciliation Australia, concluded in late 2022 and our second RAP is currently being drafted with a focus on inclusive pathways, community partnerships and cultural awareness.

Basketball Australia’s official statement on the Voice to Parliament:

“Basketball Australia supports the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Voice to Parliament.

“We acknowledge that our sport is played on the traditional lands of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We respect the significant contribution First Nations Peoples have made and continue to make to our game.

“To help inform our staff, players, and community, we will be providing resources and opportunities to promote safe and respectful conversations and encourage everyone in the basketball community to make an informed decision.

“We cannot change the past, but we can learn from our shared history, so we can all work together towards a more inclusive future.”
