Drills and Ideas Looking Forward to 2024

Striking a balance between skill/platform drills, small -sided games and competition is important so players can develop technique, understanding and decision making.

Keeping practice fresh and varied is an ongoing quest for coaches at all levels of the sport and assists with creating a positive learning environment for players to flourish. The Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence coaches continue to share various drills with coaches across the country, with a view to showing what the emerging young athletes in the program do as part of their daily training environment.

The use of basic video to share ides for drilling, teaching and player development is so valuable for growing the sport. Be it through more complex fixed camera systems or simply grabbing your mobile phone to capture a drill idea, there is so much vision available for coaches to learn from.

Different coaches will learn in different ways, but seeing a drill or breakdown series functioning "live" is often the best way to develop and we are fortunate that so many Australian coaches and programs engage in the spirit of sharing.

The Basketball Australia Coaches X account is also a terrific place to observe drills and get some new ideas for the 2024 season. These simple video resources are perfect for the coach on the run and can be easily implemented into your suite of drills.

Coaches from the national coaching network also consistently share different drills and small-sided games via social media and other platforms and it is always valuable to learn and borrow from coaching colleagues to add some variation and freshness to your training sessions.

With more than 80 clinics have been conducted at national, state and local level in 2023, there are plenty of great drills and ideas for player development available through the various videos and notes.

Most of the clinics focus on ideas for player development and include various drills, SSG's and breakdowns that can be applied to all levels of the sport.

We have been fortunate to have our Boomers and Opals coaches share their knowledge, as well as COE, WNBL, NBL and NBA coaches contribute to coach development throughout the year.

One of the highlights of Australian coaching and coaches is the spirit of sharing and we would like to thank and acknowledge coaches across the country for their ongoing commitment to supporting youth development and developing others.
