The Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence recently hosted a clinic for coaches from Canberra and surrounding areas, covering concepts in 5 out offence.
The clinic covered a range of offensive concepts suitable for youth teams of all ages, with a focus on spacing, alignment, cutting and decision making. With the trend towards 5 out offence at all levels of the sport, this clinic was designed to provide a platform for coaches to build their offensive systems and teaching points.
Some key points and take-aways from the clinic -
- Your offensive spacing will be defined by how well you run the floor
- 5 out offence an effective tool for teaching key offensive concepts such as spacing, alignment, cutting, passing, receiver principles and finishing
- The ability to pass and cut at speed underrated skills
- Get more cuts at the front of the rim than your opponent
- "Cutting is a solution" - rarely wrong
- Start and finish all cuts at the 3-point line
- "Load, look & leave" teaching cue for cutting
- As the offensive coach, encourage solutions, don't provide solutions
- Importance of teaching "2-side, 3-side" concepts
- Chart cutting - how many cuts at the front of the rim, how many back cuts, how many "sacrificial cuts"?
Thanks to the coaches and athletes from the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence for their assistance with the clinic, along with Basketball ACT for the promotion and contribution. Special thanks and acknowledgment to the 55 coaches who attended on the evening.
