Basketball Australia’s one-stop-shop online platform which will empower, educate, inform and connect women in basketball with a lens on grassroots to global.
She Hoops – has been developed and inspired out of BA’s women and girls strategy and will be a safe and inclusive destination brimming with content, resources and information.
Monthly themes will focus on and explore gender bias, pathways, women supporting women, male champions of change, Indigenous women in basketball, leadership and the juggle.
She Hoops will amplify the organic content and programs states are territories around the country are producing. Complementing the strong education piece will be live events, mentor and network sessions run by She Hoops ambassadors plus some big-name contributors.
Basketball Australia’s head of women and girls Lauren Jackson says She Hoops is the first offering of its kind.
“This platform gives us an opportunity to connect, empower each other and educate. It’s a great way for women to take their love of basketball to wherever they want to take it and we want to inspire people,” she said.
“There’s been so much talk, movement and mobilisation around empowering women in leadership positions in sport but we’re talking about the very elite level. Off court, we’ve missed the people that are actually doing the hard work, at the coal face, who are working on their own in small offices, battling the boys club culture and doing it tough every single day and that’s where the change isn’t really happening.
“I think the most eye-opening piece of this has been making sure we’re trying to connect those women with the broader basketball community and then give them opportunities to do what it is they need to move forward in their careers and on the pathway in basketball.”
Basketball Australia chief executive Matt Scriven believes She Hoops will inspire women and girls involved in all facets of the sport.
“We have so many amazing, talented women in our sport and it’s about championing and showcasing those people to provide inspiration to others across all disciplines of basketball” he said.
“She Hoops creates an environment where people at the grassroots can connect with people at an elite level, to a Sandy Brondello who’s coaching in the WNBA, in a safe and inclusive space.
“It’s really got something for everyone to learn, educate and better themselves or just be a part of a broader, inclusive community.
“The platform is focused around coaches, officials, and administrators. There’s a real focus on all those areas to create opportunities, pathways, mentoring and education. The game doesn’t happen if they don’t exist.”
