The goals of three Australian basketballers were achieved this week when they participated in their first Seven Consulting Opals camp.
Courtney Woods, Isabelle Bourne and Miela Sowah all shared the same dream of becoming an Opal and donned the green and gold in Melbourne as the national team began a new four-year cycle in pursuit of FIBA World Cup (2026) and Olympic (2028) campaigns.
The trio all fulfilled college scholarships in the US and have returned to Australia and produced eye-catching form over the last few years.
Townsville Fire star and co-captain Woods said she was feeling a mix of excitement and nerves.
“It’s such a new experience but coming into camp I’m very open minded and excited to meet a lot of people that I’ve never done anything with besides play against,” she said.
“I’m glad I’m a little bit further in my career, I think it would be really nerve wracking to do this in your early 20’s, so I’m glad I’m a little bit older and feel sure of myself.”
Forward Bourne has impressed in her two WNBL seasons with the Adelaide Lightning and has had a big few weeks following her debut for the Gangurrus at the 3x3 Champions Cup in March.
“I’m very excited to be here. It’s been a massive, exciting few weeks and I’m so grateful for the opportunities that have come my way,” she said.
“I’m always grateful to be playing basketball and especially in the green and gold.
“This week, I’m not putting too much expectation on myself, being around so many amazing players I’m looking to soak that up and learn from the best and be a sponge as best I can.”
Perth Lynx sharpshooter Sowah has also experienced recent success with the Gangurrus, winning a gold medal at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup a fortnight ago.
“I’m so excited, I’ve definitely been dreaming of this for a while,” she said of Opals camp.
“3x3 is kind of like the stripped down version of basketball in terms of can you beat your player, can you defend a player and then five-on-five is the core, the love and it’s super fun to be playing both.”
