One month to go until tip off

The countdown has begun until the commencement of the 2021 Australian Under 18 Junior Championships and Kevin Coombs Cup being staged by Wyndham Basketball Association at Eagle Stadium in Werribee, Victoria from April 10 – 17.

After the COVID pandemic lead to the cancellation of the 2020 event, the country’s best elite junior basketballers aged under 18 will compete in both boys and girls divisions for the chance to be crowned National Champions. Alongside the Australian Under 18 Junior Championships the Kevin Coombs Cup is Australia’s leading junior wheelchair basketball championship which sees representative teams from states and territories showcasing their skills for the coveted national title.

With planning well underway, General Manager for Wyndham Basketball Association Craig Armstead, is excited by the opportunities for the hosting of these two prestigious tournaments will afford his association.

The Wyndham Basketball Association and Wyndham basketball community are eagerly awaiting the Under 18 Australian Junior Championships and Kevin Coombs Cup next month.

“These elite events will showcase Australia’s best young basketball talent and provides the opportunity for all involved to watch these high-quality games and be part of this amazing event.

“While growing rapidly, basketball participation is underrepresented in Melbourne’s West, and hosting the Championships and Cup is really important to us, as it provides a further opportunity to engage with our local community and let them enjoy the sport we love.

“Wyndham Basketball Association would also like to specifically thank for their support, Wyndham City Council and in particular Cr Peter Maynard, the Federal government and local member Joanne Ryan MP, and the state government and our local member Tim Pallas MP.”

Basketball Australia General Manager Basketball Paul Maley, is also eager to see the championships get underway in April.

“After a disrupted 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, it was important to the sport’s high-performance pathway that both the Under 18 Australian Junior Championships and Kevin Coombs Cup went ahead this year, particularly with both the FIBA Under 19 Basketball World Cups plus the Paralympic Games set to take place in 2021.

“With the Under 18’s and Kevin Coombs Cup only a month away the anticipation is palpable, and we are excited to see these competitions get underway on April 10 in Werribee.

“On behalf of Basketball Australia, I would like to wish the best of luck to all competing teams, athletes, coaches and support staff plus thank the Wyndham Basketball Association for hosting this year’s event.”
