Robert Staunton OAM

Staunton was a great contributor to the game and is well known for the tremendous work he did for junior basketball in Australia.

He held down the position of NSW Secretary for nineteen years and was a referee at the national junior level between 1959 and 1964.

Amongst other things, this tireless worker managed the men’s national team at the Montreal and Moscow Olympics and was an integral part of the FIBA Technical Commission between 1975 and 1980.

He served for many years as the head of the Australian Basketball Federation playing a big part in establishing the Australian Junior Championships, The National Youth Teams, and the Australian Institute of Sport program.

– Refereed Australian Junior Championships – 1959-1964.

– Member of Australian Basketball Union’s Secretary in the 1960s.

– National Junior Men’s Secretary – 1966-1977.

– National Men’s Team Manager – 1971-1980.

– Convenor, Oceania Junior Commission – 1975-1980.

– FIBA Technical Commission – 1975-1980.

– Member FIBA Junior Commission – 1975-1980.

– Australian Representative to FIBA – 1976.

– Honorary Secretary Australian Basketball Federation – 1977-1978.

– First full time employee of ABF as Executive Director – 1978.

– Served as a FIBA Technical Committee member – 1979, 1982 and 1983.

– Order of Australia Medal for Services to Basketball – 1987.

– Inducted into the Basketball Australia Hall of Fame in 2006.
