The largest event on the Australian Junior Championship calendar has gotten even bigger in 2016 with a record 154 teams set to compete when the 2016 Australian Helloworld Schools Championships (ASC’s) are held in Melbourne from December 4-9.
Improving on 2015’s mark of 122, 154 teams from seven states and territories will compete in 2016 with around 2,000 athletes representing 70 schools.
In the past, the ASC’s have brought some of our brightest talent to the fore including Dante Exum, Lauren Jackson, Patty Mills, Kristi Harrower, Mark Worthington as well as the likes of Najvada George, Makuach Maluach, Bul Kuol, Jack White and Dejan Vasiljevic who competed at last year’s Champs and excitedly, the pool of talent stretches even further this year.
Victoria (77) has the greatest representation of teams among states while NSW (34), Queensland (15), South Australia (13) and Western Australia (10) all sit in double-figures with the final teams shared between ACT and Tasmania.
Aquinas College from Victoria has the distinction of the greatest participation with six teams set to compete across the Under-17 Boys, Under-17 Girls and Under-15 Boys.
The Champion Division teams were named last week with Lake Ginninderra (ACT), Newington College (NSW), Hillcrest Christian College (QLD), Sacred Heart College (SA), Don College (TAS), Marcellin College (VIC), Willetton Senior High (WA) and Trinity College (SA – wildcard) to compete for the men’s title.
Westfield Sports High (NSW), Brisbane State High (QLD), Tenison Woods College (SA), Rowville Sports Academy (VIC), Willetton Senior High (WA), St Peters (QLD – wildcard), Box Hill SSC (VIC – wildcard) and Maribyrnong College (VIC – appointed) will compete for the women’s title.
The ASC’s are open to all high schools and Basketball Australia will host the event in Melbourne until 2018 at the State Basketball Centre in Wantirna South, Knox Basketball Stadium in Boronia and Fairhills High School in Ferntree Gully.
