Spectres’ McDonald on his pathway back to the NBL

Shane McDonald, an 11-year SEABL veteran, speaks to BATV about finding a balance between his basketball life and teaching career as well as his recent call-up to the NBL.

After three short stints with NBL clubs, the last of which came in 2012, Shane McDonald had narrowed his focus to his teaching position at Maribyrnong College as well as continuing his role with the Nunawading Spectres in SEABL.

However, a chance to compete in the upcoming 2016 NBL season with the New Zealand Breakers was an opportunity too good to pass up.

“[The NBL is] not something that I’d pursued for a long time,” said McDonald.

“So when something like that does pop up, particularly from a team that’s won four of the last five Championships, it does come as a bit of a surprise.”

Unfortunately, the full-time obligation will mean McDonald will have to leave his teaching role but the college has been understanding and will allow him to return once he has completed his NBL commitment.
