In the Opals’ FIBA World Cup game against Serbia, Bec Allen suffered a serious rib injury. It was initially reported that there was no structural damage. Upon returning to Melbourne, Bec reported ongoing discomfort, BA medical staff ordered further tests, these subsequent scans and x-rays revealed fractures to two ribs and a partial lung collapse.
Bec will remain in Melbourne to receive further treatment and recover before returning to her European Club- Valencia Basket.
“I think everyone who witnessed the impact of that collision saw how much pain I was in. Further scans have indicated that the injuries were more substantial than first diagnosed. Based on the initial diagnosis, I attempted to play in the Semi Final against China but the injuries prevented me from continuing”.
“I’ve had my fair share of injuries during my career. I know my body and I will do the work to recover and return to the court as soon as I can. I am also really grateful for all the good wishes and kindness I received from everyone and will forever be super proud of my amazing teammates and the Bronze medal we achieved in Sydney’, said Allen
Bec’s performance and commitment to the Opals in their Bronze medal-winning World Cup campaign was outstanding, particularly given the hardship she endured, and we will continue to provide her with the support that she requires.
