Carl Jungebrand, the FIBA Head of Refereeing, has conducted another successful series of clinics across Australia and New Zealand, instructing officials on refereeing philosophies, mechanics and techniques
Following a tour in September last year, these clinics were organised by Basketball Australia and Basketball NZL in cooperation with FIBA and the NBL for state programs prior to the commencement of their regular seasons.
The first tour was aimed at national panels whereas this one is aimed at the next tier down,” said Basketball Australia Officials Manager Peter Carey.
“They are the next group coming through to national panel(s). Our aim is to have the same message delivered from the one person to as many officials as possible.
“This promotes consistency across all states in the way the game is officiated and the mechanics of operating three-person refereeing.”
Across Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Sydney, over 400 officials attended the clinics with strong responses from referees at every venue.
“We had the added component of one of the top current FIBA officials in the world, Steven Seibel, in attendance and a fitness component with Alejandro Vaquera that replicated the fitness activities within a FIBA Championship.
“Our officials have never had this type of education previously so it was good to be able to take the tour nationally. We will be looking to follow up in the future to maintain the current officiating trends being promoted by FIBA.”
