Vale George Dancis

Born in Lativa, Dancis migrated to Adelaide after the Second World War and would later help South Australia dominate the Australian Championships.

Standing at 200 centimetres and known as ‘Big George’ in his playing days, Dancis was a pioneering player in Australian international basketball and a member of the first Australian team to ever compete in an Olympic basketball competition when selected for the 1956 Games in Melbourne.

He would play an impressive 11 official games for Australia including the pre-Olympic tournament in Rome during 1960.

Dancis was inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
