2040 Vision

One Game. One Vision. One Future.

Everybody’s Game

Basketball Australia and every State and Territory Association have united to launch the Australian Basketball 2040 Vision – Everybody’s Game, setting a bold, shared ambition for the future of the sport.

For the first time, the entire basketball community – from grassroots to the elite – has come together behind a single national Vision that charts a path to 2040. It’s a roadmap to grow participation, strengthen pathways, celebrate community and culture, and ensure basketball continues to be a game for everyone, everywhere.

A Vision for the Whole Game

Developed through consultation with more than 1,200 players, coaches, referees, administrators and fans, the 2040 Vision captures the collective voice and aspirations of the basketball community.

It recognises the power of the game to inspire, connect and uplift people across Australia, and sets out how basketball can continue to evolve to meet the needs of future generations.

The Vision is built around eight focus areas that will guide the sport’s growth over the next 15 years – across two horizons: to Brisbane 2032 and beyond.

The Eight Focus Areas

  1. Participation
Creating more opportunities for all Australians to play the game they love — at every age, ability and stage of life.
    • Expand participation through fun, flexible and affordable formats that reflect how Australians want to play.
    • Strengthen partnerships with schools and communities to grow the game nationwide.
  1. Facilities
Ensuring basketball has the infrastructure it needs to grow — safe, modern and accessible venues for every community.
    • Deliver a national facilities audit and strategy to identify gaps and guide future investment.
    • Advocate with a united voice for basketball’s inclusion in government and developer infrastructure planning.
  1. Community & Culture
Building a sport that reflects Australia’s diversity — where respect, safety and belonging are lived values on and off the court.
    • Embed a national approach to safe, respectful and inclusive sport through shared frameworks and leadership.
    • Strengthen basketball’s role as a unifying force that connects communities and celebrates cultural diversity.
  1. Leadership
Uniting basketball’s leaders to work together in the best interests of the game — aligned, transparent and accountable at every level.
    • Establish a nationally aligned operating model that promotes collaboration, efficiency and shared services.
    • Embrace data-led decision-making and collective innovation to improve how the sport is governed and delivered.
  1. Development Pathways
Creating clear, inclusive and sustainable pathways that connect community basketball to the world stage.
    • Establish consistent national frameworks for developing players, coaches and officials, supported by quality education and resources.
    • Ensure pathways remain accessible, affordable and focused on wellbeing, opportunity and long-term growth.
  1. High Performance
Driving excellence and innovation to keep Australia at the top of world basketball.
    • Continue to invest in world-leading programs, facilities and the Centre of Excellence to develop the next generation of athletes.
    • Embed a “Win Well” philosophy that champions success, wellbeing and the distinctive Australian style of play.
  1. Basketball’s People
Celebrating and supporting the people who make basketball possible — volunteers, referees, coaches and administrators.
    • Deliver a national approach to recognise, train and develop the game’s workforce, promoting a positive and respectful culture.
    • Reduce administrative barriers and strengthen the experience of those who give their time to grow the game.
  1. Brand & Identity
Building a shared national brand that reflects basketball’s culture, community and ambition.
    • Strengthen storytelling across the game — celebrating players, teams and achievements on the world stage.
    • Leverage the success of Australia’s national teams and the sport’s cultural influence to grow the game and inspire new fans.

A Shared Commitment

The 2040 Vision represents a whole-of-sport commitment — co-created by Basketball Australia and every State and Territory Member Association.

It’s not a top-down plan, but a shared direction that recognises the diversity of Australian basketball while uniting the sport around a common goal:

To make basketball Australia’s largest and most loved team sport by 2040.

Looking Ahead

The launch of the 2040 Vision marks the beginning of a new era for Australian basketball — one defined by unity, ambition and shared purpose.

From local courts to international arenas, the message is clear:

Basketball is everybody’s game — and together, we’re shaping its future.
